Hermes Desktop App — Your AI Agent on macOS, Windows & Linux
Hermes Desktop App — Your AI Agent on macOS, Windows & Linux
You shouldn't need to be a Linux expert to run an AI agent.
That's the idea behind the Hermes Desktop App — a one-click installer that brings the full Hermes agent experience to macOS and Windows. No terminal commands. No dependency hell. No WSL2 workaround. Just download, install, authenticate, and you're running.
Here's everything you need to know.
What is the Hermes Desktop App?
The Hermes Desktop App is a native installer for macOS and Windows that packages the entire Hermes agent stack into a single application. It includes:
- The Hermes CLI — the full command-line agent with all tools
- The Gateway — the messaging layer that connects to Telegram, Discord, WhatsApp, and 20+ other platforms
- Tool Gateway — web search, image generation, text-to-speech, and browser automation
- Skills system — on-demand knowledge that the agent loads as needed
- Subagent support — delegate work to parallel subagents
It's the same Hermes that runs on Ubuntu servers and cloud VMs — just packaged for your desktop.
Why a Desktop App?
Hermes has always been a terminal-first tool. That's great for developers and sysadmins, but it's a barrier for everyone else.
The Desktop App changes that. Here's who it's for:
Business owners who want an agent running on their office Mac or work PC — no Linux server required.
Students who want to experiment with AI agents on their laptop without dual-booting or setting up a VM.
Anyone who wants the power of Hermes without learning command-line tools first.
The Desktop App doesn't replace the CLI — it wraps it. You still get full access to the terminal, config files, and all the power-user features. You just don't need to use them to get started.
How It Works
1. Download
Go to hermes-agent.nousresearch.com and download the installer for your platform:
- macOS 12+ —
.dmginstaller - Windows 10/11 —
.exeinstaller - Linux — terminal install script (or use the CLI directly)
2. Install
Run the installer like any other application. On macOS, drag to Applications. On Windows, run the setup wizard. On Linux, run the install script.
3. Authenticate
Run hermes setup --portal — one OAuth flow covers a model provider plus all four Tool Gateway tools (web search, image generation, TTS, browser). Done.
4. Run
Start the gateway. Connect your messaging platform. Start talking to your agent.
Total time: about 60 seconds.
Desktop App vs CLI vs Cloud
Desktop App
- Setup time60 seconds
- Requires terminalOptional
- Runs onmacOS, Windows
- Always-onWhen app is running
- Best forGetting started, daily use
- CostFree
CLI (Terminal)
- Setup time5-15 minutes
- Requires terminalYes
- Runs onLinux, macOS, WSL
- Always-onWhen terminal is open
- Best forPower users, automation
- CostFree
Cloud (VPS)
- Setup time30-60 minutes
- Requires terminalYes (SSH)
- Runs onAny cloud provider
- Always-on24/7
- Best forProduction, 24/7 agents
- Cost$5+/month
The Desktop App is the fastest path to a working agent. The CLI is for power users who want full control. Cloud is for production agents that need to run 24/7.
Most people should start with the Desktop App. You can always migrate to a cloud setup later.
What You Can Do With It
Everything. The Desktop App gives you the full Hermes feature set:
- Automated lead monitoring — catch every form submission in real-time
- Scheduled reports — morning briefings, evening recaps, weekly summaries
- Uptime monitoring — know immediately when a site goes down
- Nightly idea generation — wake up to tools you didn't ask for
- Content production — drafts from project history, vetted by you
- Trading analysis — automated briefings, session prep, trade journaling
- Subagent workflows — break complex tasks into parallel workstreams
The Desktop App is the entry point. What you build with it is up to you.
Getting the Most Out of It
If you install the Desktop App and want help setting it up for your specific workflow — that's exactly what I do.
The Full Setup service ($500) includes:

- Live screen-share build session
- Training on how to manage and extend your agent
- 30 days of post-setup support

The Point
The Hermes Desktop App removes the last real barrier to running an AI agent: technical setup.
You don't need to be a developer. You don't need to learn Linux. You don't need to rent a server. Download the app, authenticate in 60 seconds, and start building.
That's the shift. From "I wish I could run an AI agent" to "I'm running one."
The Hermes Desktop App is part of Hermes v0.16.0, built by Nous Research and released under the MIT license. It's free and open-source.
